Charles R Francis
Charles was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, on the 19th of May 1875, and he enlisted into the US Marine Corps on the 21st of April 1898, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When he deployed to China in support of the Boxer Rebellion, he was a Private and his action during the advance on Tientsin would later earn him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:
In the presence of the enemy during the battle near Tientsin, China, 13 July 1900, Francis distinguished himself by meritorious conduct.
Charles became one of thirty-three Marines to receive the Medal of honor during the Boxer Rebellion on the 19th of July 1901, and he remained in the Marine Corps until the 30th of April 1923, reaching the rank of Sergeant Major after 25 years. Charles Robert Francis died on the 15th of July 1946 at the age of 71 and he is buried in Hollywood Forever in Hollywood, California: Section 5, Lot 737, Grave 5.
