Pomeroy Parker
Pomeroy was born on the 17th of March 1874, in Gates County, North Carolina, and not much is recorded about his life. In fact, I am unable figure out why his gravestone has the name Mark Festus on it. However, it is known that he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in September of 1892, from Norfolk, Virginia. He was deployed as a Private to Cuba in support of the Spanish-American War and his actions later earned him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:
On board the U.S.S. Nashville during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Parker displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.
According to one source, Pomeroy received a bad conduct discharge two months before having the Medal of Honor presented to him, but I cannot verify that to be true. Pomeroy Parker died on the 30th of December 1946, at the age of 72 and he is buried in the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel, North Carolina.
