John was born in Oskarshamn, Sweden on the 22nd of January, 1865 and he enlisted in the US Navy in Maryland. He was a Seaman during his deployment to Cuba in support of the Spanish-American War and his actions there earned him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:

On board the U.S.S. Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Johanson set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.

John received his Medal of Honor on the 21st of November, 1899 and he remained in the Navy, serving in World War 1 and reaching the rank of Chief Boatswain’s Mate. John Peter Johanson died on the 14th of December, 1937 at the age of 72 and he is buried with his wife, Bertha, in Arlington National Cemetery: Section 6, Grave 9768.
