James E Bailey
James was born in Dexter, Maine, in 1849 and he enlisted in the Army. He was a Sergeant with Company E of the 5th US Cavalry when he deployed in support of the Indian Wars and it was his actions over the winter of 1872 into 1873 that would earn him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:
Gallant conduct during campaigns and engagements with Apaches.
James received the Medal of Honor on the 12th of April 1875 and was discharged from the Army on the 8th of June 1875. The details of James E Bailey’s later life and death are unknown. He is one of 314 recipients that are considered to be lost to history.
