Henry was born in County Clare, Ireland on the 8th of March, 1840, and by 1865, he had moved to the US and enlisted in the US Army. He had been assigned to the 5th US Infantry Regiment and it was his actions on the 21st of October, 1876, that would earn him his first Medal of Honor. The citation reads:

...for bravery at Cedar Creek, Montana.

This bravery was during the Battle of Cedar Creek under the leadership of Chief Sitting Bull against the Lakota warriors. Not much more than a year later, Henry's actions at Bear Paw Mountain on the 30thof September, 1877, would earn him his second Medal of Honor. The citations reads:

...carried Lieutenant Romeyn, who was severely wounded, off the field of battle under heavy fire.

Lieutenant Romeyn was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during that battle and Henry became one of three Medal of Honor recipients to receive the Medal for saving the life of another Medal of Honor recipient. Now, Henry didn't actually receive these Medals until the 26th of June, 1894, fifteen years after he had mustered out of the Army. He lived in Miles City, Montana, where he also died at the age of 76 on the 20th of April, 1916. Henry Hogan is buried in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City, Montana.
