Edwin was born on on the 28th of August, 1877 in Brooklyn, New York, and at the age of 21, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He was deployed to China in support of the Boxer Rebellion and it was his actions as a Corporal that would earn him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:

In action against the enemy at Tientsin, China, 20 June 1900. Crossing the river in a small boat while under heavy enemy fire, Appleton assisted in destroying buildings occupied by the enemy.

Edwin received his Medal of Honor on the 22nd of March, 1902 and there is some vague information regarding his post conflict service. It is known that he reached the rank of Captain, but I am unsure if he did so in the Marine Corps or in the Army, since information points to both. Edwin Nelson Appleton died on the 26th of September, 1937, at the age of 60, and he is buried with his parents and two of his five siblings in their family mausoleum in the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York: Section K/111, Lot 13724/41.
