Cary D Langhorne
Cary was born on the 14th of May 1873, in Lynchburg, Virginia, and he attended the Virginia Military Institute after high school. Following his graduation in 1894, he then attended the University of Virginia, graduating in 1896, and then was commissioned in the US Navy in 1889. Cary deployed to Mexico as a Surgeon, and it was his actions in Veracruz that would later earn him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:
For extraordinary heroism in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914. Surg. Langhorne carried a wounded man from the front of the Naval Academy while under heavy fire.
Cary received the Medal of Honor on the 4th of December 1915, and he remained in the Navy through the end of World War 1, reaching the rank of Commander. He was married to Zaidee and I found no record of the couple having any children. Cary Devall Langhorne died on the 25th of April 1948, at the age of 74 and he is buried with his wife in Arlington National Cemetery: Section 11, Grave 868-SS.
